The OSI Model is the short term for Open System Interconnection Reference Model. It is also sometimes called as the OSI Reference Model as well. This is a set of layered network protocol design and layered communication at the same time. There are seven different layers that are included in the network architecture of the reference model. The seven divided layers include the Physical Layers, the Data Link, the Network, Transport, Session, Presentation and lastly the Application. Because of these layers, some people prefer to call it as the OSI Seven Layer Model.

The layers that make up the OSI Model allow services depending on the services that are catered by the layer above it. At the same time, it gets service from the layer that is directly under it. Usually, this is what most administrators use if they want to have a flawless network which is needed by different kinds of applications.

Below are the different seven layers in the OSI Reference Model as well as its functions:

1. The Physical Layer - this is the part where interface would connect to the transmission medium.

2. Data Link Layer - this is responsible for the error-free transmission of data across the physical layer.

3. Network Layer - it allows the packets from the source network to be delivered to the destination network.

4. Transport Layer - it is responsible for the transferring of the data between the end users. Aside from that, it also keeps track of the different failed transmissions as well.

5. Session Layer - responsible in controlling the connections within the network. Moreover, it is also responsible for establishing, terminating and even managing of the dialogues between the remote and local application.

6. Presentation Layer - this layer makes sure that the data sent from one system can be read by the recipient system.

7. Application - this is the layer of the OSI Model that is near the end user. It caters the needed services to the applications that are not within the walls of the OSI Reference Model.
