The RJ-11 is currently the most widely used phone jack. These connectors are utilized to terminate phone lines and are generally installed with single line Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) jacks. Among all the registered jacks, they are the most common ones where virtually all of the telephone jacks in offices and houses in North America as well as other countries use this form of connector. Another feature of such connectors is they are often encased in plastic and designed modularly. The modular pattern implies that the components such as connector and telephone jack can be plugged with one another instead of being hard-wired.
The RJ-11 connector applies the use of six position and four contacts, 6P4C wiring standard. It indicates that the connector consists of six positions where only four of them have contacts. Contacts meaning they have two wires connected to them. This way of standard wiring for modular connectors are applied to make sure the plug can fit completely. The additional wires can be used for other applications, namely powering an LED ring-indicator or preventing the pulse-dial telephone from ringing the addition phone bells, as a platform for selective ringers. The pin number 5, being either the yellow or orange color code or the pin number 2, being either the black or white with orange stripe color code in RJ-11 can carry low voltage DC or AC power during the powered up state. The telephone line will supply the power for all the phone terminals. Some of the terminals comprise of incandescent lights hence they require more energy compared to normal telephone line supplies, considering their typical transformer output is five volts and the dial lights will consume 6.3 volts.
Depending on the color code convention of your RJ-11 connector, reading from left to right while holding it with contacts pointing upward and jack facing you, there are two terminals, namely negative and positive. Pin number 3 will be the negative terminal having either the red or blue color code while pin number 4 will be the positive terminal, being either the green or white with blue stripe color code.
